I have a large file with a long TOC, a list of figures and a list of tables. I would like to translate it in MemoQ, Trados Studio or WF Pro. Which tool is better? How can I protect those tables from being translated/corrupt? Will I be able to update them in the target DOC file?

Hi,
I don t think it would be a great matter.
for example try to make a copy of the soruce text to target, and then generate a preview.
May be you can put some changes, but I think you ll find the toc is all in order.

The only good and safe way is to remove the TOC from the source document and recreate it in the translation. OmegaT, for example, mostly handles TOCs without problems, but not always.

Studio 2009 can keep the styles of headings, captions etc. of the original (source) text, so if they are correct, you can generate the TOC, List of Figures etc. automatically in the target text too. I suggest generating TOC etc. in the target file after translating, instead of translating the source TOC with a CAT tool. If you do the latter, the document loses the property of easy navigation (and, perhaps, page numbers will not be correct).

The only thing I would add is a suggestion that you could translate quickly a few fragments, changing fragments which appear in the TOC, generate the target file, and see if it works. It should but it's better to be safe than sorry.
If the target document is in word, remember that you may need to update the field containing TOC. Hi,
if you choose to use MemoQ, I suggest that you use the DOCX-filter, which has a tick box for importing/not importing the TOC into MemoQ. Then update the TOC in Word as suggested by the others.
