I wonder if the email address I provide on my profile (profile updater form) visible to search engines?
After two years of calm I'm recieving spam mail again at increasing rate, about 50 daily. I had carefully removed all appearances of my address on my web pages in 2004. Now after updating my proz-profile this fall spam increased a lot. I'm not sure though if Proz is to blame, because in profiles the address is not shown. Today I went and changed my address to firstname.lastname@...
But does that mean nobody is able to contact me through proz.com from now on?

Paypal Link

You may want to consider removing the PAYPAL option from your ProZ page like I did. Clicking on the PayPal link on your page gives spammers and robots your e-mail address.

Hi TampaTranslator,
Where is the magic button to remove the Paypal option? I can't find it in this jungle of profile options...
Thanks in advance!
Christiane

Removing Paypal
Dec 19, 2006
I finally managed to get the Paypal link removed. Click in you profile on Contact and then on Edit contact information.
But I do not believe this paypal is the source of my spam, since I have had this link to Paypal since the beginning of my membership in 2003.
Regards
Heinrich

Thanks, Heinrich, for sharing this information. I have just removed the Paypal link from my profile page as well.
It would be good to know how spammers and robots are working when pages are being scanned. Taking into account that spam traffic has increased rapidly the last couple of months, are there any ProZ recommendations for the profile pages?
Is it enough just to avoid mentioning the proper e-mail address but keep the link hidden, e.g. "Click here (this word being linked) to send me a mail", or should we even avoid hidden links, and only use the style "john dot smith [at] smith dot com"?
Regards
Erik
