I use a laptop and about a year ago I bought an Asus 22'' LCD monitor. Unfortunately there are too many problems with it. As soon as I started using it I noticed that it made a very annoying constant noise, like a small fan. A couple of weeks later the hue started playing tricks on me; it would become pink for 20 seconds or so, as if I were looking through a pink lens, and then it would go back to normal. As soon as I started using it I noticed that it made a very annoying constant noise, like a small fan. A couple of weeks later the hue started playing tricks on me; it would become pink for 20 seconds or so, as if I were looking through a pink lens, and then it would go back to normal. Now it's started to show some flashing horizontal lines for 3-4 seconds at a time; that happens several times a day and it's very distracting.
I bought the monitor on ebay because I didn't have the time or patience to go to the store and spend 2 hours browsing and then carry it home, but now I regret it. If I'd bought it from a store I could have easily returned it. Theoretically I could have returned it to the ebay seller because the monitor was brand new and under warranty, but it's such a big item that it would be a big hassle to repackage it, take it to the post office, and pay more than 50 dollars in shipping; and then I don't know how the seller would react. I'd rather consider it a lesson learned, throw out the monitor and go to an electronics store and buy a new good one.
Frankly I don't know if I just got a really bad monitor or if all Asus monitors are like that or if this was a bad model. The model is "VW222U Splendid". I'm not joking, it's actually called "splendid". And what a misnomer that is! Could my experience have been less splendid? (Actually, believe it or not, it could have. I googled this model and it turns out that others have had problems with it as well. One user was seeing "dancing red dots". )

May I ask what monitor you use? What brand and model?
Are you happy with it and would you recommend it?
Any brands or models I should avoid?
Do you find glossy screens easier on the eyes or do you prefer matte ones?

As soon as it stops snowing I'm heading to the electronics store. I've had enough of this. The sooner I do it the better because on top of all the other problems with this monitor, it has started to give me headaches and my eyes hurt. It must be all that pink!

Inexact science... Feb 16, 2010

I understand your unwillingness to deal with such disappointing hardware, but I would still get in touch with the seller and ask for his opinion. Some smaller sellers actually are quite eager to go that extra mile and if the door-to-door delivery can be arranged, it might not be that bad...

Also, it might be that this particular model was less than stellar, but as far as I know the manufacture of LCDs is not an exact science... What I mean is that a certain percentage (from what I k

Also, it might be that this particular model was less than stellar, but as far as I know the manufacture of LCDs is not an exact science... What I mean is that a certain percentage (from what I know, quite higher than for other appliances) is bound to have problems. You can find negative opinions on practically every model, the top-shelf ones have just less of them (or they receive better PR).

That's why it is so important to have proper support/replacement coverage. (As an aside, after several years practically free of hardware failures, four of my devices - mouse, router, printer network card and hard disk went bad. All were replaced promptly by the manufacturers - the hard disk, a Seagate one, after three and a half years of operation!)

My monitor is Iiyama ProLite 82403WS - I bought it after using another monitor from the same company for several years. It works very well, but of course for others mileage may vary.

Should mention your budget Feb 19, 2010

Personally, being able to pay 400 euros for a 26" 16:9 was a great improvement for me last year, my previous monitor was a 21" 4:3 and I paid for it 1000 euros 4/5 years ago. The thing is you don't say which price you expect to pay but considering how comfortable ot is to work on this format, I would recommend to buy a new model (mine is a LG). THere have been such improvements in terms of comfort in LCD screens that it is not worth looking for some bargains on e-bay.

You should expect to use the same monitor 4-5 years (not your laptop) so a little extra is worth. I would mention two extra points : check the possibility of adjusting tilt/height. When overworked, it is recommendable to change the general setting to avoid muscular pains. Second, I think the 26" format is a minimum for having two windows side-by-side (source/target) (and not one above the other).

thanks! Feb 20, 2010

Jabberwock, Claude, thanks so much for the advice. I'm buying my new monitor today!
Claude, I didn't mention my budget because it's not an issue at this point. I think I've tortured my eyes enough with this monitor, so now I just want a good one. If the price is good, then great, but it will be the last thing I'll be looking at.
I didn't know that adjusting the height/tilt helped to avoid muscular pains. I'll try that.

Jabberwock, you're right, I suppose there's always a risk of the equipment turning out to be lower quality than expected. I hope I'm luckier this time!
