I do transcription jobs on and off. With so many choices of headphones in the marketplace, choosing the best fit, comfort, and sound for transcription requires a lot of research and trials. I have been using earphones but they hurt my ear holes so much. I've also tried earphones that hang on my ears (like glasses) but back of my ears started bleeding (experienced with wearing glasses too).

My advice Apr 17, 2010

My advice: choose big over-the-head headphones that comfortably sit around, not on your ears. The bracket should be adjustable so that the phones do not squeeze the head (well, actually, it's difficult to find headphones without such adjustment). That's the way to prevent ear pain while wearing headphones for a longer time.

As to the sound quality - I guess there's no need for a high-end professional products used at music recording studios.

Price is a matter of your preferences. I have cheap (~USD 25) headphones and use them mainly for music and movies, sometimes also for translating audio files. I compared my headphones against a number of more sophisticated devices (~ USD 150) and didn't find a significant sound drawbacks in mine ones. Not being an audiophile (my ears receive a slightly narrower sound range than bat ears, in particular at the upper end ), I find such solution more than optimum.
