Hello,
I'm looking to purchase (not upgrade to) the office 2007 suite - probably to the small business version.
There are plenty of OEM versions around for sale, from some reputable companies, but having read around the subject a little I'm still unclear as to whether it is legal to install these on existing machine or whether they are only legal if purchased as a package with a computer.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Many thanks,
Caroline

OEM software May 5, 2010

By definition, OEM softwares can only be used by “an original equipment manufacturer, an assembler, re-furbisher, or pre-installer of software on computer systems.”

As long as you abide by the terms and conditions of the licence, there is nothing illegal about using OEM softwares.

The only catch is, if you run into problems, you don’t have a phone number to ring for support because as “an original equipment manufacturer, an assembler, re-furbisher, or pre-instal

One more pitfall May 6, 2010

OEM versions, as opposed to boxed ones, don't allow for moving your licenses. This practically means that if you e.g. sell your laptop machine and buy a new one, you can't move your Office license to your new computer. You will have to purchase a new Office license instead.

Thanks May 6, 2010

Thank you, 2114 and Stanislav, for your help.

It's interesting to know that OEM software can't be transferred from one machine to another - to me, that means that it makes more sense to buy full-version office once (especially as it seems to be 1/3 cheaper in the UK than here in France!) and then keep moving it on from one machine to the next, upgrading only when strictly necessary, than to wait to buy it with my next pc.

Since office 2010 will be coming out in October ( I think), would it be a better idea for you to download the beta for free and then buy the licence when it is released, rather than buying 2007 now?
Just a thought.

Thanks for your comment, which is a very good point. As it happens, a 2010 upgrade is free with office 2007 even if you buy it now.

I'm now trying to work out whether the MS Works 8 which was on my PC when I bought it (although I've never even opened it!) entitles me to buy an "upgrade" to office 2007. I'll get there in the end!

Actually, when you buy 2007 now, you might get a better deal than just with 2010:
