Last year, I purchased memoQ at the instigation of a customer then important to me. I paid the special price of 405.00 EUR instead of 620.00 EUR for the Pro version.

Unfortunately, I failed to remember that I had been notified in writing that I would have to pay a fee of 124 EUR (20% of the listed price) every year after the first one, for upgrades and support.

In the past year, I received at least three upgrades, attended one webinar but had no technical support requests. I recently tried to upgrade, with the experimental intention of using memoQ just for myself, without receiving customer packages. The upgrade was refused, as my first year had expired. As I no longer work with the customer metioned and now again use Trados for everything, I have decided not to upgrade.

If I come across a new customer who wants me to use memoQ, I will have to pay 124 EUR to upgrade (I have encountered compatibility issues between versions and upgrading gives you the best chance of avoiding these) and for a support provision I shall probably not use.

I find the term "permanent license" a trifle misleading here.

What is exactly misleading? Apr 26, 2011

Well, you can use the version you have purchased as long as you live (or rather, as long as you find hardware to run it on). How is that not "permanent"?

Maybe you are not planning on living very long... Apr 26, 2011

because if a customer sends you a package in the latest versionand you cannot update to it, you lose the job.

Don't see a problem Apr 26, 2011

@Robin
As Jabberwock, I don't see a problem here. This is clearly written on Kilgray's website, no hidden or small text included. I would go even further and say it's a fair deal. You want to stick to your version, you can and it will work as long as you want. If you want upgrades, you pay a yearly fee and that's it.

If Trados 2009 became 2010, you would have to pay for the upgrade and I'm sure it would be more expensive. So I really don't know what you're aiming at here.

Glad no one else has got a rude shock so far Apr 26, 2011

At my age, I cannot guarantee that I will remember a detail I've read once for as long as a year! I just wanted no one else to make the same mistake as I did.

I wonder, though , if anyone else has had the same problem I mentioned, with incompatible versions (only applies if you receive a job as a package from a customer).

Unfortunatedly, this is the policy of every single software! Apr 26, 2011

Every software I have bought, not only CAT tools, have a policy stating that you are entitled to free upgrades for a limited time period (and many of them are allowed to be used only in one PC!).

It really annoys me. But I cannot fight against it.

Regards

Clarisa

Until now the upgrades for Trados (when purchased on regular basis) were 99 EUR each.
I do not find the policy by Kilgray to be dishonest or anything else of that kind, however it simply shows, that each company needs to earn money with their products. You name the company as you wish, but this will change nothing: you buy a product, it becomes outdated, you have to pay for the upgrade. And TBH there is nothing wrong with that.

Every single software? Many yes, all not - there are also free upgrades.

I was quite sure it was more than that if you wanted to upgrade from T2007 to Studio. But it really doesn't matter here. I talked about Trados only because the OP did.

The point is really the same - I think it's 100% fair to ask for a subscription for updates once a year. There are many upgrades for memoQ throughout the year and for the 20% charge you get all of them.

You are right Apr 27, 2011

But the policy is still the same - updates are free, upgrades have to be paid.
I really do not see anything wrong here.
